Las Vegans

By: Marjorie Drew

So many things already said in 1922 Sinclair Lewis began Babbit with: "The towers of Zenith spired above the morning mist; austere towers of steel and cement and limestone, sturdy as cliffs and delicate as silver rods."

Charles Dickens wrote in A TALE OF TWO CITIES in 1859: " It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was was the season of light , it was the season of Darkness,m it was the spring of hope , it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going the other way - iin short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of the noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or evil , in the superlative degree of comparison only"

" Ours is essentially a tragic age , so we refuse to take it tragicallty," wrote D.H. Lawrence in 1928. And, in 1`962, Anthony Burgess began his novel A CLOCKWORK ORANGE: " What's it going to be, then, eh?"That is what we are all asking, united in our feelings and in this, our great United States of America.

PICTURE THIS

Entering the Boulevard Barber Shop at 906 S. Sixth St. is like stepping into a Norman Rockwell painting; a sice of more serene America . The shop is owned and operated by a great guy and barber, Bob White. Bobb is a native Las Vegan and married wth three grown children of whom he is very proud. He has seen many changes in the Valley and has been fighting for a better Las Vegas for many years.
In 1984 Bob ran for County Commissioner and lost by a narrow margin, and in 1988 , he ran for City Council, losing by 200 votes. He was then appointed to the cCity of Las Vegas Traffic and Parking Commission and just recently signed for another four years. Bob's approach to that job may not be as genteel as the one he applies to a friend sitting in his barber chair. But he;s a fair man, knowledgeable and astute, and keeps abreast of the Valley's rapid growth. Having been in Las Vegas for more than 40 years myself, I can see that challenge could not only be a tough one, but frustrating as well.
That said, in his shop, he's an easygoing barber whgo talks on many subjects, his softvoice being heard of the hum of the shears amidst the smell of talc and tonic. The room is filled with fish yarns and other topics of interest. While anecdotes of the "good ol' Vegas" pass back and forth. So, stop in and see him sometime. Pewople do, you know, and they don't even get a haircut

Mr. PUGSLEY AND FRIENDS
When you visit Glorified Bodies body shop at 3595 Boulder Hwy., you'll be greeted by an adorable Pug/Chihuahuamix named Pugsley. Pug's friend, Yvonne, has been with the company for seven years. Rose King is the owner/operator of the business, and his mom.

Yvonne, Pugsley, and Rose

Rose has been in the Las vegas Valley for more than 50 years. After attending school in Boulder City and Henderson, she married. Her son, Dan was born at Nellis Air Force Base. She also has two daughters and an adopted son. " I wanted an eight-year-old boy, and I got Scott on his eihth birthday, He's a minister today.
When I had to go to work," Rose said, " I didn't know anything clerical, so iI took (in thoses days) consideried 'man's wor.' In fact, I was the first women truck driver in the Valley. I drove for a bumper re-chroming company, worked for B&L mixing paint, sold cars for a while, and did other jobs in the automotive field, plus operated King's Dog Grooming for 12 years while raising my kids."
A compassonate person, Rose has made many humanitarian contributions to the Valley. For three years she had her own ministry, The lighthouse Ministry , a women's shelter. Unfortunately, the city stepped in, and after losing a second court battle, she had to close the facility. However , that sdidn't stop her. she continues to work diligently with A.A., volunteers with other programs and attends church at The Oasis.
In 1974, ROse and her son, Dan, opened a body shop. They found the property on Boulder City and voila! Glorified Bodies was born. " We took the name from the Bible, " Rose said. " We conduct our business as user friendly. That's one reason most of our customers are referred or repeat customers. When new-comers seem skeptical that a women is BOSS, I tell them that after 25 years, if ever there was a mistake to be made... I've already made it. "Go see Pug and the gang. You'll be glad you did.

LOOK AT THE BIRDIE.
Find me? I know I'm small, but I do my job. Yousee my mom and dad can't hear very well, so when the phone rings or someone knocks on the door, I make alot of noise. Other times, I just sing and look pretty. I've got a nice big house, and I'm in the center of the living room where I can watch everything that goes on. I have lots of toys, a swing, and I like watching television with my three dog companions. When mom got the last puppy at the SPCA, ' Baby' used to stand up to my cage and whine at me. Guess she'd never been around birdsbefore. Mom told her to leave me alone because I was a good girl and protected the house... she quit bothering me. I'm glad Baby is a doggie, though. I'm not real sure a kitty would be as tolerant. By the way my name is Tweety Bird.
