A Cat Without A Kingdom

The Battle Continues, Nakia -- Part II...

By Mary M. Baldasano

The battle continues to help find Nakia his own Kingdom (Catdom?). Recently, Ms. Mendez and I met with Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman to request his assistance in seeking a solution to her ongoing issues with local officials. As I have always found him to be, Mayor Goodman was receptive to our requests and provided the extra nudge toward cooperation. We thank the Mayor for his time and assistance.
Las VegasAll in all though, Las Vegans never cease to amaze me. Eric and Janet Gerber are no exception. When they heard about our Mountain Lion Nakia and owner, Peggy’s situation, they didn’t hesitate to open their hearts or their home. Janet said, "We jumped right on it as soon as we heard about the story. We knew the risks, but also that he had been properly trained so we weren’t concerned." The Gerber’s also discussed their plans with neighbors before offering their assistance, apparently though, not with the right neighbors.
Las VegasIn addition, Tom and Michelle Hancock immediately stepped in to help by developing a Nakia Millennium Calendar to be given free with every $25 donation. (Call 702-369-5842 for information.) Our friend in Colorado’s radio land, Major Ripster of Cable Radio Network, has joined our efforts by broadcasting for assistance from his listeners. We appreciate everyone’s time and contributions to our effort.
Las VegasOh, and let’s not forget the wonderful help of Cub Scout Pack 208, Den 6, and their Den Leader John Kakol. These young men not only adopted Nakia as their Den’s Mascot, but volunteered their time on a Sunday afternoon collecting signatures to gain support for Nakia to remain in the Gerber’s backyard. Ms. Mendez assures them that this is purely temporary.
Las VegasThe Gerber’s have had Nakia in their backyard for a couple weeks now and have watched Peggy working with him. "They are wonderful together. You can tell they were meant to be together. No one else can interact with wild animals like her. Do only the wealthy have the right keep their exotic animals? It’s unfair that Peggy should have to keep relocating him at the whim of one or two individuals. We want him to stay as long as it takes. He has a healthy and clean environment here."

Las VegasOur team of supporters, and Peggy as well, remain undaunted. We all know that continued faith and hard work will overcome any adversity. The Las VegaN is organizing and sponsoring a fundraising event for Peggy and Nakia. Watch and listen for details on the Las VegaN Report, Channel 25 (Cable 12) and KDWN 720 AM radio.
Las VegasMs. Mendez and helpers are already busy looking for a place that will meet the now stipulated "minimum 2 acre" requirement. If you would like to contribute to Nakia’s care or future home, the Mountain Lion Benefit account has been established at US Bank and the number is 153250365220. We don’t know exactly how long Nakia will be allowed to remain at his current location. Things continue to happen quite "suddenly."
Las VegasThe Las VegaN will keep you informed of events. Although the Las VegaN is doing what it can to help, we still need the contributions of our advertisers and readers to make a difference. If you would like to help sponsor or participate in the fundraiser, please contact Ms. Mendez at 438-6263 or the magazine. LV
