Lifestyles of Las Vegas Seniors...

By Bob Rind

Bob RindThis month, we are deviating from our regular schedule to report on the senior’s number one sports activity, and probably the main reason for wanting to live in Las Vegas – GOLF. Las Vegas offers 365 days of golfing paradise, excluding a few days of foul weather, with the fall and spring seasons being the most comfortable.
As stated in past columns, the Las Vegas area has more quality, top rated golf courses within its boundaries (within a 1-1/2 hour ride), than any metropolitan area in the world. Due to space limitations, I can only list a few including the name, telephone number, website if available, course designer (CD), price (P) which depends on the season, and some side information. Most courses take reservations up to 60 days in advance, some 30 days, and a few at 7 days. Advance reservation time will be indicated by (A). All golf courses are par 72.
ANGEL PARK: (702) 254-4653, www.lasvegas golf.com/angel park, (CD) Arnold Palmer, (P) $45-125, (A) 60. Two 18-hole courses, the Mountain Course characteristics include occasional forced carries over canyons and gorges, sloping greens, and wide fairways, guarded bunkers and flowing native grasses. The Palm Course offers flatter greens; therefore rewarding good shots with many possible birdie putts. Facility also has an all grass, lighted putting course.
ANTHEM COUNTRY CLUB: (702) 914-3000, (CD) Keith Foster, (P) $90-150, (A) 60. The course weaves majestically through the natural terrain of the Southern Nevada desert with many holes played through canyons, and highlighted by waterfalls and native landscaping. This is one of three private equity golf clubs in Southern Nevada, located in a Del Webb resort style community.
BADLANDS GOLF CLUB: (800) GO TRY 18, (CD) Johnny Miller with consultant by Chi Chi Rodriguez, (P) Varies, (A) 60. The Badlands’ course holes wind and weave through the northwest desert, forcing golfers to hit accurate golf shots throughout the round. The Badlands is Las Vegas’ only public 27-hole facility, with a full-service practice facility.
BLACK MOUNTAIN GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB: (702) 565-7933, (CD) Bob Baldwick, (P) $35-65, (A) 4, groups one year. Wide, rolling fairways, Joshua trees and Mojave desert vistas on the front nine give way to tight, tree lined fairways that wander through custom homes on the back nine. A spacious grass driving range, with practice chipping and putting greens available.
DESERT INN GOLF CLUB: (800) 634-6909, (702) 733-4290, (CD) Lawrence Hughes. Hotel guests can book times up to a year in advance with a rate of $165. Non-guests book 7 days in advance for Friday and Saturday, 6 months for Sunday - Thursday at a rate of $225. A traditional layout of glistening lakes, beautiful flowers, well manicured fairways and a long history.
