Legal Prostitution

The Oldest Profession In The World...

Dr. Adele ZornI am constantly doing research in the ever-changing field of Human Sexuality. With the legalization of prostitution in some areas of Nevada, I decided to do research about Nevada’s legal brothels. I was invited to visit a brothel, far out of town in a very countrified setting. I was treated very well and was not only given a complete tour of the facility, but I was able to interview the Madame and some of the prostitutes.

hat I found was that the clean, comfortable setting where the "Oldest Profession in the World" was run, was run like a well-run business establishment would be anywhere else.
The Madame, a plain looking, older grandmotherly-type, told me that when her husband of many years died, she became very depressed. She joined a support group and decided to go back to work. One of the women in the group was working at a brothel and told her there was an opening there for a cashier. She hesitated, but tried it and found the atmosphere comfortable, friendly and interesting. She enjoyed being around people and was so good at her job that she eventually became the manager/Madame.
The prostitutes are not charged for services or food at the on-premises beauty salon, tanning room and employee restaurant. The bathrooms all have bidets. The prostitutes individually decorate their rooms, and there is a staff to keep their rooms clean. Some of the prostitutes live on the premises, some off, and some live out-of-state and work three weeks on and three weeks off. Some only work weekends. During the week a prostitute will service about 16 clients and about 40-50 on weekends.
The girls are examined weekly and get blood tests monthly. They always use condoms and there has not been a case of HIV found in any of the prostitutes who work there. The prostitutes I interviewed said they have been offered extra money not to use condoms, but they will not do it. They always examine the genitals for lice, warts, herpes or any infection and usually won’t service the client if they see a problem. However, sometimes they may masturbate them using a condom and glove. If they see seed warts, they won’t take the client at all because seed warts are very contagious.
There have not been too many problems with violence, drugs, etc. There is security and if a problem exists, the client would be immediately removed. Each bed has a panic button nearby.
The procedure is as follows: customarily men will ring the bell at the gate where they can be seen before being allowed entry. Inside, the setting is not really tantalizing, just a nice entry lobby with couches and armchairs. However, the girls are sexy looking, wearing provocative short, low-cut clothing. When the client enters, the Madame says, "Company" and the girls, who are at the bar or sitting around the comfortable entry lobby, line up to be viewed. The client either picks one and they go to her room, or he can go to the bar alone where he can socialize and then make his choice. Some ‘tricks’ have their favorites who they always ask for.
When the prostitute takes a client to her room, she negotiates the price with him before any servicing takes place. The prostitute gets half, and she arranges her own fees according to the services requested. He then pays the prostitute, and she pays the cashier before doing anything with the client. The time spent is usually between 20 minutes and an hour. Swimming pools and spas are available as well as dungeon and orgy rooms. Most men want ‘straight sex’ although one prostitute told me she had a client who wanted to be diapered and bottle and breast-fed. One prostitute said that most of her clients are married. She told me about a man who said he was impotent with his wife, but said he was okay with her. Another prostitute does not have any porn in her room. She uses meditation type music and massages her clients with massage oil or lotion. She enjoys doing this, especially with handicapped people who are often touch-hungry. She has had clients who are disabled, blind, retarded, etc., and she feels she is doing a special service for these people who may not otherwise have a chance to be sexual with a woman. She has had clients who only want to be held, who are lonely and just want to talk, and others who are so inhibited they won’t even remove their clothes.
I asked the prostitutes whether they kiss their clients, and that seems to be a no-no. They said they don’t kiss mainly because of diseases and because kissing is intimacy, and it is sex, not intimacy that is their job. For them, prostitution is their work, just as if they would go to work at any job. They seem to like what they do and said the money is much better than they could make elsewhere. Most said they never reach orgasm with their clients, although some said they occasionally do. Some are married, and one even met her husband at the brothel.

When asked how they got into prostitution, one said that when her son got into trouble, she needed money and realized this was the fastest way she could make that much money legally. She had been married twice and only had four sex partners before becoming a prostitute. She was never a street prostitute and never had a pimp. She says she enjoys sex very much and enjoys her work.
In researching prostitution, I found that medieval cities had well-regulated brothels, usually not far from the church, and ‘temple prostitutes’ offered themselves to the faithful with their fees going to the temple. Nevada has the only legalized brothels in the USA. How unfortunate in this day and age of diseases such as AIDS, that illegal prostitution flourishes without controls. Illegal ‘hookers’ (especially street ‘hookers’) either take their lives in their hands and eventually become infected, or if already infected, may end up taking someone else’s life.
There are a number of reasons why I would approve of legalizing, regulating or decriminalizing prostitution. People are living longer and if sex is desired, many men without partners may not have the ability or know how to make contact or socialize in order to meet someone for sex. Both the costs of socializing and taking the chance to be rejected, or having claims of sexual harassment being imposed on them when asking for sex can be devastating. There are also those who have never married, or perhaps, will never be married, who still have the need for sex. Often the cost of dating when all they want is sex is more than it would cost for a prostitute, and all the false game playing would be eliminated if prostitution would be legalized.
Another situation, in which well-regulated legalized prostitution would be helpful, is the masses of older women who are left without male partners. Unfortunately, older men seem to die before older women, and a brothel for female clients with male prostitutes would be beneficial. However, I don’t know if females would be willing to go to and pay for male prostitutes, even though many older women do pay for male companionship or gigolos and don’t consider that prostitution. Women would probably be more apt to ignore this type of brothel because of our ‘societal norms.’ However, when considering the health of a longer-living population, denial of sex can severely incapacitate one both physically and mentally. There is also the dilemma for meeting sex partners in the Gay population, especially for older Gay males and females, and a brothel for Gays would also be beneficial.
There are many that claim legalization would result in more crime and disease. From my research and interviews, it appears that legalizing brothels would be a deterrent and would keep these things from happening. Countries such as The Netherlands and Germany have legalized prostitution and have improved the prostitute’s working conditions. The prostitutes also pay regular income tax on their earnings. Australia even has a brothel selling stock on the stock market. Many years ago, a prostitute named Margo St. James started a union in San Francisco to improve working conditions for prostitutes. Many prostitutes had worked for hardly anything and gave their money to pimps. If prostitution were legalized, they would not need pimps to protect them, and prostitutes would be able to count on the police for protection if threatened with violence.
Because of moral issues, crusaders for ‘purity or decency’ keep prostitution from becoming legalized. However, making prostitution illegal has not really solved any problems, rather it seems to create more. Nevertheless, prostitution continues and the law has proved incapable of suppressing it. The "World’s Oldest Profession" continues to keep its title and probably always will. LVN
